Once I’d decided that I wanted to look into getting Invisaligns, the next step was having a consultation with a dentist or orthodontist who was an Invisalign provider.

Dentists and orthodontists who want to be Invisalign providers (also known as being an Invisalign dentist or an Invisalign orthodontist) have to have special training, along with their staff, in order to qualify to be approved by Invisalign. The course is one full day, and Invisalign also offers continuing education.

So, the first thing you have to do is find a qualified Invisalign provider. Fortunately, Invisalign makes this easy by offering a “Find an Invisalign provider near me” page.

They also offer a self-assessment quiz on their site, that is a series of six questions about your lifestyle, what’s most important to you in braces, and that sort of thing, which will supposedly tell you if Invisalign is right for you. However, I suspect that no matter what you answer, the outcome will be that Invisalign braces are right for you. In fact, I took the Invisalign self-assessment, answering in the way most designed to disqualify myself, and the most negative thing I could get it to say was “you should see an Invisalign provider to be sure.” This is in no way slamming Invisalign – it’s to be expected. Really, my point is that you can probably skip the 2 minutes of self-assessment taking, and just go have a consultation with a provider.

As with any professional from whom you will be receiving services, it’s important that you not only feel comfortable with their level of skill, experience, and expertise, but that you feel comfortable with them – their philosophy, their treatment views, and even their personality. This is someone on whose you will have to rely, and with whom you will have to interact, for a year or so. So make sure you are completely comfortable with them.

In truth, I had two Invisalign consults. The first one left me feeling uncomfortable, even though they said all the right words, it just didn’t feel like a good fit. So, I sent to a second provider, for second consultation, and I’m so glad that I did, as that is how I found my awesome Boulder area Invisalign orthodontist, Dr. Rudman. (He also has offices in Denver, where, based on the Google reviews, Dr. Rudman has quite the enthusiastic following!)

After your initial consultation, if you qualify for Invisaligns and approve the treatment plan suggested (and the cost), you will schedule your first appointment, where they will take pictures and plaster models of your teeth. I’ll talk about that next.
